CHAPTER TWELVE

Kris shouldn't have pushed his luck. Claudia was in a bad mood because she’d had to tell the woman her husband was still alive but could die in the next few hours. Kris understood that, but he tried to make a joke, even though the damn Sleigh had decided it wasn't going to risk capture and fucked off.

He couldn’t do much about that. The Sleigh was controlled by the Workshop. He could manually fly the Sleigh when he was in it and override the security protocols as needed, but the damn thing would not be caught, and it would not be used to the detriment of humanity as a whole.

No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Kris appreciated that, but he didn't appreciate that, even with the new equipment, they were basically on their own. The crates survived their rough landings and brought them all kinds of nice things.

Kris had retrieved the rifle he'd designed with the Workshop. Its weight and power matched his size and capabilities. It could connect to the HUD on his suit or provide a live feed to the home base, and its punch could be customed for the situation.

The rifle tipped its rounds with armor-piercers, frags, and explosive rounds. He'd opened up the rifle a couple of times to figure out how that was done, but he had gotten no answers, only more questions. That was what he had come to expect from the Workshop, but it had given him a leg up when he was outnumbered and outgunned.

They never saw him coming. The day they did was probably the day he probably died, but that was a matter for another time. He'd taken the rifle apart out of habit. Unless there was a time constraint like bullets flying over his head, never take a rifle into battle without cleaning it.

The rifle didn't need that, but Kris ran a quick check before mechanically slapping it together and attaching the scope. Nothing to work on, but it was part of his ritual and got him in the mood.

Claudia had inspected her preferred weapons and was now focused on body armor.

They didn't need to say much. They could now take the fight to their enemies. They had the right equipment. Now all they needed was intelligence.

Kris finished with his rifle as Claudia finished with the body armor, and he turned his attention to their comms while Claudia loaded the magazines they would use.

If it was up to him, he would bomb the whole damn place from orbit and be done with it, but they couldn't do that. They were good guys now, so he had to stay on the straight and narrow.

He formulated a plan in the back of his mind. He steadied his grip on the comm unit and started preparing it for the work they had ahead of them. Once all the weapons and systems were ready, they would be given to the locals so they could fight for their island, their town, and their families.
